“Do you ever do this, you think back on all the times you’ve had with someone and you just replay it in your head over and over again, and you look for those first signs of trouble?”Tom Joseph Gordon-Levitt — a greeting card writer — is a hopeless romantic, while Summer Zooey Deschanel — new assistant to Tom’s boss, — doesn’t believe in love at all, especially after watching her parents’ failing marriage and divorce. Upon seeing her for the first time, Tom becomes infatuated with her, and is convinced she is the one after a brief exchange about The Smiths during an elevator ride. After a night of drinking, the two discuss their views on relationships and love, and decide to become friends. The next day, while in the copy room, Summer kisses Tom, but leaves once her copies are done. The two become increasingly close, and one day while running around, imaginging being a married couple in Ikea, Summer admits that she isn’t looking for anything serious. They continue to share fun and intimate moments conversations about past lovers, Tom’s love for architecture, Summer’s thoughts and stories, etcetera. Tom is incredibly in love with a woman who won’t put a label on their relationship. One day, after having seen a film, the two go out for pancakes. Summer blurts out that she thinks they should seperate, and Tom questions her, considering how happy they are. She admits that she isn’t happy, and Tom walks out. Summer calls after him, saying he is still her best friend. Tom, reminiscing our their relationship, is determined to get her back; he spirals into a depression that begins to affect his work. His boss asks if his poor work performance has anything to do with summer leaving she quit working for the card company, but Tom denies it. Tom tries to take steps to get out of his depression; his sister suggests he simply stop only remembering the good from his and Summer’s relationship. He then starts to look back on the bad times in their relationship, to figure out when everything started heading south.500 Days of Summer 2009 is not presented in chronological order, similarly to how we do not remember things in chronological order. Every scene starts out with what day it is. The film begins on day 488, with Summer’s hand with a ring on it holding Tom’s hand. The film flips back and forth, showing earlier and later days in their relationship. This puts together their story, although not in order, and shows Tom’s reflection. It gives us an interesting and more unusual presentation of the story, but keeps the audience on their film truly isn’t your average sappy chick flick. It’s an exhilirating twist to the overdone, vanilla love story. This is one man’s struggle through heartbreak, and how he finds himself and rediscovers his passions again. Zooey Deschanel flawlessly plays a mysterious, upfront, carefree woman that Tom cannot truly have. She is bubbly, whimsical, but above all she is her own woman. Joseph Gordon-Levitt tackles the roll of a man who experiences such a wide spectrum of emotions over the course of the film. One moment he is on top of the world — the next he isn’t leaving his home. One moment he is running around Ikea with the woman he loves — the next his boss is telling him his worth ethic is lacking. He is simply unable to convince a woman who does not believe in love, that their love is real. It’s impossible not to love both characters. You have to admire Summer’s independence and free will, but you also have to feel for Tom’s inability to have Summer, and his broken heart. 500 Days of Summer is a reminder that real life isn’t always so cookie cutter perfect — and that’s okay. It doesn’t feed us unrealistic expectations for love, like The Notebook 2004 or The Vow 2012 might. The film is plausible and honest, as to what one hopeless romantic might experience in reality.500 Days of Summer is a phenomenal film that really has it all humor, drama, romance, and even some choreographed dancing. Both Deschanel and Joseph Gordeon-Levitt tackle their roles with such poise. It’s the movie you pop in when you and the girls are a little sick of sobbing into popcorn while you wait for your face masks to dry down, Saturday night after Saturday night. It’s a raw, refreshing breath of air in the world of chick flicks. Ça sent la comédie romantique guimauve mais parfois ça donne un petit bijou. Comme indiqué dans l’introduction du film, ceci n’est pas une comédie romantique. En effet, à travers 500 jours, on va voir la vie d’un couple de sa naissance à ses moments de bonheur mais aussi les aléas de la vie, les désaccords… Pourtant, même si ça semble du déjà-vu, on n’est vraiment dans un autre registre. On n’est pas face à une linéarité du couple, mais on va voir aussi les conséquences de la rupture et tout ça à travers les yeux de Tom. C’est là la force du film. L’intrigue montre comment l’amour joue sur le moral qui va faire du yoyo. C’est la reconstruction personnelle, la découverte, les trahisons. On y voit vraiment les étapes du deuil mêlées à celle d’un amour naissant. Une habile construction du scénario qui fait qu’on passe de la comédie au mélodrame, le tout avec finesse et crédibilité. C’est vraiment prenant et on peut se reconnaitre dans les situations. Il n’y a pas de scènes inutiles tant chacune est savoureuse et apporte quelque chose à sa manière. La conclusion du film se veut même extrêmement mignonne. Le casting est exceptionnel tant Joseph Gordon-Levitt et Zooey Deschanel sont époustouflants. Tom est ainsi quelqu’un qui croit vraiment en l’Amour, en ses valeurs, voulant construire quelque chose. C’est le gentil gars adorable. On s’attache très vite à lui , aussi bien à travers son bonheur mais aussi ses malheurs. C’est un homme qui perd espoir, qui n’y croit plus mais qui va devoir trouver une raison d’aller de l’avant. Concernant Summer, on ne peut pas la qualifier comme la méchante de l’histoire. Elle avait mis sa règle dès le début de ne pas vouloir du durable sauf que les deux ont une vision différente de l’amour. Elle aussi va évoluer avec le temps jusqu’à ce qu’elle découvre ce qui lui manquait. On est aussi beaucoup touché par la petite sœur de Tom qui fait preuve d’une grande maturité pour aider son frère à s’en sortir, incarnée par la jeune Chloë Grace Moretz qui montre déjà une partie de ses capacités. Il faut dire que la réalisation contribue grandement à la qualité du film. Tout d’abord, car rien n’est linéaire. On va et vient dans la relation de Tom et Summer sans jamais s’y perdre. Et ça, on le doit grâce à un intertitre qui intervient pour nous indiquer à quel jour on est dans cette fameuse durée des 500 journées. Un panneau de paysage qui d’ailleurs reflète l’état d’esprit de leur relation entre ensoleillée et couvert. Cela donne beaucoup de rythme au film tout en jonglant habilement dans le temps pour nous faire encore plus apprécier chaque moment. On félicite également la bande originale dynamique avec des chansons entraînantes qui illustrent bien les images. 500 jours ensemble est un film excellent !
